Socrates argues that love is to desire something one does not have and considers to be good. However, when considering love through the life of Jesus, you will see that when God loves, God doesn't long to get something, but does so to impart something. Followers of Jesus look to Jesus as he loved not as a means to get something, but as a means to give of who we are. True love is self-sacrifice for others and not a means to get something. "For God so loved the world that he gave..."
